Sep 23, 2010 ... Harvest moon: Not since 1991 has a full moon occurred on the same night as the fall equinox, and it won't happen again until 2029.

NGC_7317-Stephan's Quintet Galaxy Group

NGC_7317-Stephan's Quintet Galaxy Group

October 12, 2010

These galaxies are of interest because of their violent collisions. Four of the five galaxies in Stephan's Quintet form a physical association, Hickson Compact Group 92, and are involved in a cosmic dance that most likely will end with the galaxies merging.

Stephan's Quintet in the constellation Pegasus is a visual grouping of five galaxies of which four form the first compact galaxy group ever discovered. They are 280 million light years from earth.

The famously named "Ring Nebula" is located in the northern constellation of Lyra, and also catalogued as Messier 57. It is one of the most prominent examples of the deep-sky objects called planetary nebula. It is 2,300 light years from earth.

NGC_4038-Antennae Galaxies

NGC_4038-Antennae Galaxies

October 13, 2010

The Antennae are undergoing a galactic collision. Located in the NGC 4038 group with five other galaxies, these two galaxies are known as the 'Antennae' because the two long tails of stars, gas and dust thrown out of the galaxies as a result of the collision resemble the antennae of an insect. These galaxies are 45 to 65 million light years from earth.

NGC_7331

NGC_7331

November 06, 2010

NGC 7331 is a spiral galaxy about 40 megalight-years (12 Mpc) away in the constellation Pegasus. Visible in the image are three distant background galaxies (NGC7336, 7335, 7337). They are approximately 10 times more distant than NGC 7331 and lie in the same line of site.

NGC_7635 Bubble Nebula

November 11, 2010

NGC 7635, also called the Bubble Nebula and Sharpless 162, is a H II region emission nebula in the constellation Cassiopeia. It lies close to the direction of the open cluster Messier 52. The "bubble" is created by the stellar wind from a massive hot, 8.7 magnitude young central star.

Messier 74 (M74, NGC 628) is one of the nicest examples of so-called "grand-design" spiral galaxies seen face-on. It is one of the most difficult for amateur telescopes to see and is 35000 kly from earth.

NGC_68

NGC_68

November 12, 2010

NGC 68 is a lenticular galaxy in the constellation Andromeda. NGC 68 is the brightest member of a galaxy cluster known as VV-166 and Arp 113. The group is made up of eight elliptical, lenticular, or spiral galaxies. This group is roughly 350 million light years away.
